On this day, 37 years ago, on April 14, 1988 (February 28, 1988 in the lunar calendar), the Political Settlement Agreement on Afghanistan was signed in Geneva. On April 14, 1988, the agreement on a political settlement of the Afghan issue was signed under the auspices of United Nations Secretary-General Perez de Cuellar. The agreement stipulated that the Soviet troops that invaded at the end of 1979 would withdraw from Afghanistan starting from May 15, 1988 and would be withdrawn within nine months. Perez de Cuellar said at the signing ceremony that the several documents signed today are very important achievements in bringing peace to Afghanistan.
