Seventy-three years ago today, on January 2, 1952 (December 6, 1951 lunar calendar), Luo Shengjiao sacrificed himself to saving Korean children. Luo Shengjiao was a native of Xinhua, Hunan Province, and was born into a poor peasant family. In 1951, he joined the Chinese People's Volunteers and came to the front line of Korea. He saw the suffering of the Korean people under the iron hooves of the American invaders, and his heart was very heavy, and he was determined to contribute the most to the resistance to the United States and assistance to Korea. Luo Shengjiao's unit was stationed in Ishida-ri, Chengchuan County, South Pyongan Province, North Korea. On January 2, 1952, he had just returned from the shooting training ground when he suddenly saw a Korean teenager fall into the icy water of the river. He immediately jumped into the water to rescue. In the cold winter and twelfth lunar month, the ice was biting. Luo Shengjiao finally found Cui Ying, the child who fell into the water, but just as he was lifted out of the water, the ice collapsed and the child fell into the water again. At that time, the temperature was minus 20 degrees, and Luo Shengjiao's face and neck were purple with cold. He struggled to catch his breath before he found Cui Ying again and pushed him up with all his strength. The child was saved, but Luo Shengjiao sacrificed his young life. He was only 21 years old. With deep pain and reverence, the North Korean people buried the martyr of Luo Shengjiao and built a monument for him, inscribed with the inscription of Comrade Kim Il Sung, the great leader of the North Korean people: "The internationalist spirit of the martyr Luo Shengjiao will coexist with the North Korean people forever." The North Korean government awarded him the first-class national flag medal of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the first-class soldier's honor medal. The leading organ of the Chinese People's Volunteers honored Luo Shengjiao with special merit and awarded him the title of "first-class model of the Chinese People's Volunteers". The Central Committee of the Chinese New Democratic Youth League posthumously recognized him as a "model Communist Youth League member".
