On this day, 56 years ago, on November 30, 1969 (October 21, 1969, the lunar calendar), Tao Zhu died of illness despite injustice during the Cultural Revolution. Tao Zhu and his wife Zeng Zhi Tao Zhu were born in 1908 in Qiyang, Hunan. In 1926, he entered the fifth phase of Whampoa Military Academy and joined the Communist Party of China in the same year. He served as Secretary-General of the Military Commission. In 1927, he participated in the Nanchang Uprising and Guangzhou Uprising. From 1929 to 1933, he successively served as Secretary of the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and Secretary of the Zhangzhou Special Committee, and successively established the Guerrilla Corps of the Southern Fujian Workers and Peasants Red Army and the People's Armed Forces of the Eastern Fujian Region. He was arrested by the Kuomintang in Shanghai in May 1933 and rescued from prison in 1937. He came to Yan 'an in 1940 and served as Secretary-General of the Central Military Commission and Secretary-General of the General Political Department. During the War of Liberation, he successively served as secretary of the Provincial Party Committees of Liaoning, Liaoji, and Northern Liaoning, and political commissar of the Seventh Column of the Northeast Field Army. During the Battle of Pingjin, he pretended to enter Peiping to negotiate with Fu Zuoyi. Later, he took on the task of reorganizing the uprising troops and organizing and leading the southern working group. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he successively served as director of the Political Department of the Central South Military Region, secretary of the South China Branch of the Communist Party of China, first secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and the Central South Bureau, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, vice premier of the State Council, minister of the Central Propaganda Committee, and member of the second and third CPPCC. During the Cultural Revolution, he was persecuted to death. In 1945, he was transferred to Northeast China. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served successively as Vice Chairman of the People's Government of Guangdong Province and Governor of Guangdong Province. First Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, First Secretary of the Central South Bureau, etc. On January 7, 1967, Tao Zhu was suddenly knocked down. In October 1969, Tao Zhu's condition began to deteriorate, and on November 15, he was allowed to undergo surgery. It was found that the cancer cells had spread extensively, and the blood vessels in the abdominal cavity were so fragile that surgery could not be performed at all. On November 30, 1969, Tao Zhu, a former member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Standing Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, Vice Premier of the State Council, Minister of the Propaganda Department, Tao Zhu, a proletarian revolutionary of our country, died in Hefei at the age of 61.
