The original site of Aurora College-Xujiahui Observatory On March 1, 1903, Shanghai Aurora College officially opened. During the Reform Movement of 1898 in 1898, the reformers advocated new learning. In order to set up a translation school, Liang Qichao introduced it through the French Embassy in China and asked China Catholic Ma Xiangbo to preside over it. Later, after Cixi returned to politics, the establishment of the Translation School was suspended. In 1903, after the Qing Dynasty promulgated the academic system, Ma Xiangbo suggested that Cai Yuanpei select a group of outstanding students from Nanyang Public School to study Latin, a total of 20 people, and enrol in Aurora College to study. "Aurora" means the bright east and the boundless future. The school borrows the remaining house of Xujiahui Old Observatory as its school building. Ma Xiangbo was the dean, personally formulated the charter and implemented student autonomy. Various professors are appointed by the church. Ma Xiangbo also asked the president of the Jesuit Society for assistance. Ma Xiangbo invested all his family funds to build the school, with a total project sum of 1.3 million yuan.
