On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was assassinated
On this day, 77 years ago, on January 30, 1948 (December 20, 1947 in the lunar calendar), Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated. On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian National Congress Party, famous leader of the National Liberation Movement, non-violent non-cooperative movement, and enjoying the title of "Mahatma", was shot and assassinated by the Hindu extreme right during evening prayers in Delhi. He was 79 years old. The assassin who killed Gandhi, Nathuram Godsay, was a member of an extreme faction of Hinduism that completely rejected Gandhi's calls for goodwill, peace and love. Gandhi was born in 1869 into an aristocratic family in Polbandar, West India. When he was young, he studied in the UK and studied law. In 1891, he qualified as a lawyer and returned to China. Later, he applied to South Africa to serve as a legal consultant for a company. In 1894, Indian expatriates were organized in Natal Province, South Africa to fight against racial discrimination by the South African authorities, and the slogan of non-violence was first proposed. After the First World War, Gandhi returned to India again, traveled around India to learn about it, and organized the "Movement for Truth." During the Second World War, Gandhi launched a movement calling for "evacuation of India", which was brutally suppressed. After India's independence, Gandhi called on the people to unite to end sectarian bloodshed. In his life, he founded and edited four publications, mainly written "Indian Autonomy" and "Gandhi's Autobiography-A Story of My Experience of Truth". Gandhi was the spiritual leader of the Indian people's resistance to British rule. He initiated and led a massive non-violent non-cooperation movement to boycott British rule and British goods in a non-violent manner. The spinning wheel movement was one of them, aiming to eliminate the demand for British textiles. Gandhi won the love and loyalty of many men, women and children, including Europeans of all religious beliefs and all Indians of almost different political inclinations. Gandhi sat next to a spinning wheel reading a book. Mahatma Gandhi of India photographed the body of the Mahatma covered with petals during his lifetime. The governor went to attend Gandhi's funeral.
