Historian Wu Yuzhen passed away in Wuhan on April 9, 1993
Thirty-two years ago today, on April 9, 1993 (March 18, 1993 lunar calendar), historian Wu Yujing passed away in Wuhan. Wu Yujing (1913-1993), formerly known as Wu Baoan, was born in Xiuning, Anhui Province in 1913 in Baoying, Jiangsu Province. He was born in a poor family in his early years and did not receive a complete secondary school education. Later, he was able to enter Soochow University due to a scholarship and graduated from university in 1935. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Wu Yujing drifted to Kunming. After being introduced by friends, he met Professor Chen Xujing, who was then the dean of the Law School of Southwest United University and the director of the Institute of Economics at Nankai University. After talking with him for only an hour, Mr. Chen found that he was quick-witted and outstanding, and immediately decided that he would be admitted without the examination and become a graduate student at the Institute of Economics of Nankai University. In August 1940, the Tsinghua Gengfu public-funded examination for studying in the United States, which had been suspended for several years, was re-held, and a total of 16 students (plus 1 Linsen scholarship) were recruited, 1 in each discipline, the vast majority of whom were in science and engineering, while there were only 2 in liberal arts. Wu Yujing was admitted to the fifth public-funded student of Tsinghua University in the United States with "excellent grades". He was admitted to Harvard University for further study at the Institute of Arts and Sciences. In 1944 and 1946, he received a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy at Harvard University. In 1947, at the invitation of President Zhou Tongsheng of Wuhan University, Mr. Wu Yujing resolutely gave up the favorable treatment in the United States and returned to China to teach in the History Department of Wuhan University. In the 1950s, Wu Yujing devoted himself to the study of the ancient and medieval history of the world and published a series of research results with unique insights. In the 1960s, he and Zhou Yiliang co-edited the first unprecedented large-scale general world history textbook in our country, officially establishing the world history discipline in our country. Since the 1970s, Wu Lao began to devote his main energy to the research and exploration of the independent development of the world history discipline in our country, and successively published a series of papers such as "Nomadic World and Farming World in World History", "Agriculture and Mercantilism in World History", "The Pregnancy of the Agricultural World to the Industrial World in History", "The Reaction of Different Countries in the Traditional Farming World of Asia and Europe under the Impact of the Emerging Industrial World", and the general entry "World History" written for "Encyclopedia of China?
