On this day, 42 years ago, on March 6, 1983 (January 22, 1983 in the lunar calendar), China palaeographist Rong Geng passed away. Rong Geng (1894.9.5~1983.3.6) was a paleographist and expert on bronze inscriptions. The word Xibai is called Songzhai. Due to the connection between "Rong" and "Song" in ancient times, the fasting was named "Song Zhai". A native of Dongguan County, Guangdong Province. Throughout his life, Mr. Rong Geng collected many bronzes, about 200, most of which were collected before the Anti-Japanese War. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he returned to Guangdong in the south until liberation. Mr. almost no longer collected bronzes. In addition to being transferred to friends and sold, there were more than 150 pieces by the time they were donated to the country (now stored in the China History Museum and Guangzhou Museum respectively). Mr. Rong Geng collected bronzes mainly because of his strong patriotic feelings besides his occupation and hobby. In the 1920s and 1930s, warlords fought and people lived in poverty. Bronze ware was mostly purchased by foreigners and exported overseas every time it was unearthed. Sir, this is very distressing. Mr. Wang spared no effort to fulfill his responsibility to protect the national heritage. Even if the bronzes he purchased could not be preserved for a long time, he would strive to print them into catalogues for Tonghao research and spread Chinese culture. Among the bronzes collected by Mr. Konggeng, the most famous one is the earliest piece of gold craftsmanship-the "Luan Shu Fou" cast by Luan Shu, a senior official of the State of Jin in the middle of the Spring and Autumn Period. (Now housed in the Beijing History Museum). Most of the gold-plated bronzes are weapons, but the inscriptions are few. "Luan Shu Fou" is not only the best written on bronze ware, but also has as many as 48 words in the inscriptions on the fou. Therefore, Lao Rong absolutely cherishes this weapon.
