On this day, 120 years ago, on January 8, 1905 (December 3, 1904 lunar calendar), the largest diamond in the world was discovered in South Africa. On January 25, 1905, at the Premir mine in South Africa, a manager named Wales occasionally saw a glittering thing on the ground of the mine. He dug it out with a knife and saw that it was a huge high-quality diamond. It weighed 3106ct and was the size of an adult man's fist. It was pure and transparent, with a light blue hue, and it was the best grade diamond. This was the largest diamond in the world - "Cullinan". "Cullinan" was so big that no one could afford it at that time. Afterwards, the Transvaal local authority in South Africa bought it for 150,000 pounds, and on December 9, 1907, it was presented to the British royal family to congratulate King Edward III of England on his birthday. In early 1908, "Cullinan" was sent to the city of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, which was the most authoritative city for thinking diamonds at that time, and handed over to the company of Jo Aschall for processing. The processing fee was 80,000 pounds. After the "Cullinan" was split, it was polished by three skilled craftsmen, who worked 14 hours a day for more than 8 months to complete. A total of 9 large diamonds and 96 small diamonds were polished. The total weight was 1063.65ct, which was only 34.25% of the original weight of "Cullinan". The nine large diamonds made by "Cullinan" are all owned by the British royal family. The largest of the nine is called "Star of Africa I", weighs 530.2ct, is pear-shaped, and has a total of 74 faces. It is the largest diamond today and is set in the battle of power of the British king. The next largest is called "Star of Africa II", weighs 317.4ct, has a square appearance and has 64 faces. It is the second largest diamond in the world and is now set in the center below the crown of the British Empire. The picture above shows Princess Mary of England, who married the future Queen George V, wearing a large diamond cut from the Collinan diamond. The Currie Nanjing University diamond was dedicated to Edward VII in 1907 and was later cut into several large pieces, the largest of which is now set on the royal staff.
