106 years ago today, on April 13th, 1919 (March 13th, 1919 in the lunar calendar), the Amritsar tragedy in India killed 1,200 people. On April 13th, 1919, the British and Indian colonial government troops massacred the Indian people in Amritsar. After the promulgation of the Rolat Act in March, 1919, the Indian people held protests and demonstrations against * and strikes, school strikes and market strikes. On April 10th, the colonial government arrested and expelled two Indian national politicians in Amritsar. 30,000 people held a protest rally in the city hall square, which was suppressed by armed police and army. The demonstration turned into a people's uprising, driven away the colonial army and occupied the railway station, telegraph office and telephone office. That night, the colonial government sent General Dale to lead the British troops into the city. On April 13th, 20,000 people held a rally in Jelian Valape Square to celebrate the local festival. General Dale led an army armed with several armored vehicles to surround the square, blocked the exit of the square, and fired machine guns at the rally for ten minutes. As the crowd swarmed towards the narrow exit, Dale ordered the troops to fire at the crowded area again and not withdraw until the bullets were finished. The news of the tragedy was blocked by the colonial government for four months, and it was revealed in October, provoking a larger anti-British struggle in Punjab and across India. According to Gandhi's secret investigation, 1,200 people were killed and 3,600 injured in this tragedy. Due to the strong reaction, Britain had to transfer Dell back.
