On February 28, 1638, the uprising on the Japanese island of Kyushu failed
On this day, 387 years ago, on February 28, 1638 (January 15, 1638, the original Uprising in Kyushu Island, Japan, failed. From 1637 to 1638, farmers on the Kyushu Hara Peninsula and Amakusa Island in Japan revolted against feudal oppression and religious persecution. Most of the residents of Shimahara Peninsula and Tiancao Island are Christians. The lords of the two places brutally persecuted them and tortured farmers to pay exorbitant taxes. In October 1637, Shimahara farmers rose up and attacked Shimahara City. Tiankusa farmers responded. The rebels elected Shisha Yita (commonly known as Amakusa Shiro), who was engaged in preaching and was known as the "little angel", as their leader. In December, Shi Zhen led 37,000 rebels to occupy the old city of Mashi. The Tokugawa shogunate sent the general Itakura Shigasa to lead his army to attack the city, and Shigasa was defeated and died. In January 1638, Nobungang Matsuhira, an important minister of the Shogun, led an army of 124,000 to surround the original city and cut off the grain routes of the rebels. Dutch warships bombarded the original city at the request of the shogunate. The rebels were outnumbered and ran out of ammunition and food. On February 28, the original city fell, and Yitian Shizhen and other uprising leaders were either killed or killed, and the uprising failed. Since then, the shogunate has tightened its ban on religion and stepped up its policy of lockdown. (Hu Yulan)
