On February 9, 2018 (December 24, 2017 in the lunar calendar), the 23rd Winter Olympic Games opened in Pyeongchang. The 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games (2018ThewinterOlympicsinPyeongchang), the 23rd Winter Olympic Games, referred to as "Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games", were held in Pyeongchang County, South Korea from February 9 to 25, 2018. This is the first time in South Korea's history to host a Winter Olympic Games. The Pyeongchang Olympic Games have 15 major events and 102 minor events. The opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Winter Games and most of the snow sports will be held in Pyeongchang County, while all ice sports will be held in Gangneung City and the Alpine Skiing downhill competition will be held in Jingshan County. The Pyeongchang Olympic Organizing Committee has finalized 2,922 athletes from 92 countries and regions to participate in the Olympic Winter Games. Among them, there are 1,680 male athletes and 1,242 female athletes. On February 9, 2018, the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics held the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang. On the evening of February 25, 2018, the Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games came to an end. Norway and Germany tied for first place in the gold medal table with 14 gold medals. In terms of medal tally, Norway ranked first in the total number of medals with 14 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze, and broke the record for the total number of medals in the Winter Olympic Games; the host South Korea ranked sixth with 17 medals, second only to several major ice and snow powers in Northern Europe and North America; China won 1 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze, ranking 14th in the medal tally. The host city, Pyeongchang-gun (Latin alphabet transliteration: Pyeongchang), is located in Gangwon-do, South Korea, 180 kilometers east of Seoul. It has a population of less than 50,000 and is a famous holiday mountain city in South Korea. Pyeongchang's natural environment is beautiful and pleasant, especially suitable for winter sports. Its city slogan is "Happy 700", because the average altitude of Pyeongchang-gun is about 700 meters, which is said to be the most suitable altitude for human habitation.
