In the sixth year of Yuan Shuo (123 BC), Huo Qubing was appointed as the lieutenant of Yuyao by Emperor Wu of Han. He followed Wei Qing to attack the Xiongnu in Monan (now south of the Great Desert of the Mongolian Plateau), killing more than 2,000 people with 800 people, and was named the champion. In the second year of Yuan Hunting (121 BC), he was named a hussar general. In spring and summer, he led his troops to attack the Xiongnu army occupying the Hexi (now Hexi Corridor and Huangshui Basin) area, killing more than 40,000 people. In the autumn of the same year, he was ordered to meet the evil king of Xiongnu who led the crowd to surrender to Han. At an emergency juncture when some of the people were surrendered, he led his troops into the Xiongnu army, killed the rebels, and stabilized the situation. The evil king was able to lead the 40,000 Yu people to return to Han. In the summer of four years, he and Wei Qing each led 50,000 rode through the desert (now the desert of the Mongolian Plateau) to attack the Xiongnu. After Huo Qubing defeated Zuo Xian's royal department, he pursued the victory and penetrated more than 2,000 miles, destroying more than 70,000 people. Later, he was promoted to Great Sima and held the military power with Wei Qing. He was flexible in his use of troops, paid attention to strategies, did not follow ancient methods, was brave and decisive, won every battle, and won the trust of Emperor Wu.
