On May 15, 1919, Turkish patriotic journalist Hassan Tahsin passed away
On this day, 106 years ago, on May 15, 1919 (April 16, 1919), the Turkish patriotic journalist Hassan Tahsin passed away. In the beautiful coastal city of Izmir, Turkey, stands a tall monument engraved with a few large characters - "First Shot"; the relief around the monument records the heroic deeds of the people of Izmir against the invading army; on the top of the monument is a statue of an ordinary Turk holding a flag in his left hand and a gun in his right hand. He is the Turkish patriotic journalist Hassan Tahsin. Hassan Tahsin, formerly known as Osman Nefoles, was born in the port of Salonika in 1890. There he completed secondary school and then went to Paris, France, to study law and philosophy. After the Tripoli War broke out, he returned to Turkey. Later, he went abroad to conduct activities against the imperialist war. Returning to Izmir in early 1918, when the imperialist powers took advantage of the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I and tried to divide Turkey. Hassan Tahsin immediately engaged in political activities against British imperialism and other aggressors, defending the country's independence, opposing feudal oppression, and fighting for democratic freedoms. From November 10, 1918 to May 6, 1919, in defiance of official blockades and prohibitions, Hassan Tahsin used the method of constantly changing the registration to publish and distribute the "Human Rights", "Free Human Rights", "Peace and Tranquility" and other progressive newspapers. He personally served as the editor-in-chief of these newspapers, using his pen as a knife and gun, and tenaciously fought against imperialist and feudal forces. On February 14, 1919, Hassan Tahsin published an article in the "Human Rights" in which he slammed the Paris Peace Conference and exposed the hypocrisy of the Paris Peace Conference and the imperialist powers shouting "peace" and "the right of all nations to self-determination". He pointed out that "Turkey is being slaughtered piece by piece with a'poisonous knife 'every day." Hassan Tahshin cautioned against any unrealistic illusions about the imperialist powers and called on the people of the whole country to unite and rely on their own strength to eliminate the enemy by various means. "In order to save ourselves, we must unite closely with sincerity from the heart and severely punish the murderers who tried to slaughter our national body," he said. "In order to prevent the destruction of Turkey, all means of propaganda, riots, etc. are legal." He added: "We must defend our motherland with our teeth that have not been pulled out with full blood." Hassan Tahshin also proposed that the working people are the main body of the country, and their political status should be improved, schools should be opened to the children of the poor, and progressive political ideas such as the arbitrary oppression of the working people by a few exploiting classes should be opposed. In an article entitled "The Lower Class" published in the newspaper Human Rights on March 22, 1919, he wrote: "If there is one class worth paying attention to here, then there is no doubt that it is the lower class - peasants, mechanics, peddlers. In a word, they are the working people. The people of this class exchange their sweat for bread and fill the treasury with the fruits of their labor. They are reserves, blood transfusion teams. But they are often forgotten, despised, and even politically disenfranchised." He also wrote: "Poverty means disaster. The children of the poor, who make up the vast majority of the population, have no chance of going to school and become illiterate. They will become playthings to satisfy the selfish desires of speculators, landlords, tyrants and dictators. "These progressive political ideas of Hassan Tahsin played a great role in awakening the people, educating and uniting them to fight against the forces of imperialism and feudal landlords. In order to fight against imperialism, he organized the Izmir Association for the Defense of Ottoman Rights. This association held a historic congress at the El Hamra Cinema from March 17 to 19, 1919. The congress was attended by many local officials, interpreters and representatives of the people of all walks of life in Turkey. It was the first event in Turkish history and on the Anatolian Peninsula. The congress decided that once the occupying forces invaded Izmir, the Turkish people would rise up and resist. On May 14, the Anti-Occupation Declaration was issued. Hassan Tahsin was one of the drafters of this declaration. On the evening of May 15, the people of Izmir made a decision: to fight against the Greek invaders who were about to land at the behest of British imperialism! On May 15, 1919, the invaders landed in Izmir. They pounced on the city like a pack of hungry dogs pouncing on fat. Suddenly, the sound of gunfire broke the silence over Izmir, and bullets of hatred penetrated the hearts of the enemy. A tall figure stood in front of the occupying army. This was Hassan Tahsin. With his unflinching loyalty to the people and his strong belief in defending the independence of the motherland to the death, he fired the first shot of the Turkish people against the invaders in Anatolia. This shot was the first spark that ignited the national liberation war. The angry invading army carried out the inhumane and bloody massacre in Izmir with a hundredfold madness, and Hassan Tahsin also died heroically on this day. Although Hassan Tahsin fell, his gunshot woke up the entire Turkish people. In the streets of Izmir, on the coast of the Aegean Sea, in the mountains of Anatolia, in the plains of Chukurova, thousands of Tahsin clenched their guns and threw themselves into the war of national liberation. After more than three years of arduous struggle, the invaders were finally driven out of Turkey.
