Ma Benzhai (1902-1944) was a Hui native of Xian County, Hebei Province. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Hui volunteers were organized in their hometown to fight against the Japanese invaders. At the beginning of 1938, he led the Hui Volunteers to join the Eighth Route Army and joined the Communist Party of China in the same year. Later, he served as commander of the Hui Detachment of the Hebei Central Military Region, commander of the 3rd Division of the Eighth Route Army Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military Region and commander of the Hui Detachment. He died of illness in Xin County, Shandong Province on February 7, 1944.
