April 16, 1992 Afghan guerrilla groups take over power
Thirty-three years ago today, on April 16, 1992 (March 14, 1992 lunar calendar), Afghan guerrilla organizations took over power. On April 16, 1992, Afghan President Najibullah announced his resignation, and the Vice President assured the UN Special Envoy Sevan, who was visiting Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, that the Afghan government would continue to support the UN peace plan for the establishment of a neutral transitional committee to take over the Afghan regime. On the 21st, President Hatif announced that the Afghan government was ready to hand over power to the guerrillas. On the 24th, all parties of the Afghan guerrillas reached an agreement in Peshawar, Pakistan, to establish a 50-member guerrilla interim committee. On the 28th, the Afghan guerrilla interim committee went to Kabul to take over power, and Mujadidi became the interim president of Afghanistan. On May 5, Mujadidi appointed prominent guerrilla commander Mehsud as defense minister, Laurouz as acting minister of state security, and Gilani as acting foreign minister. Najibullah was intercepted by militias as as he fled Kabul, and various factions of guerrillas marched towards the capital Kabul
