Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On January 1, 1949, the United Nations brokered a ceasefire in Kashmir
On this day, 76 years ago, January 1, 1949 (December 3, 1948 in the lunar calendar), the United Nations facilitated a ceasefire in Kashmir. Peace was restored to the rugged and remote region of Kashmir this morning. The inland region has been sealed off in civil war since India was divided. Under the mediation of the United Nations, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire, and the fighting has now stopped. Both sides still retain their respective military positions in the disputed Kashmir region, but both sides have withdrawn most of their troops. A referendum is being planned to let the people decide for themselves whether India or Pakistan is responsible for their future. For centuries, Kashmir has been the focus of religious competition between Muslims and Hindus. In the late 14th century, Muslims conquered the area. 100 years ago, Britain fostered a Hindu ruling family. Tensions worsened, and as soon as Pakistan was founded, Muslims attacked the area. India retaliated armed and referred the issue to the United Nations. The international organization appointed U.S. Admiral Chester. Nimitz arranged a ceasefire.
