On February 1, 1902, Emperor Guangxu issued an order to allow Han and Manchu intermarriage
On this day, 123 years ago, on February 1, 1902 (December 23, 1901, the lunar calendar), Emperor Guangxu issued an order to allow Han and Manchu intermarriage. The customs of Manchu brides in the late Qing Dynasty began with the Western Empress Dowager (Cixi) announcing the "Reform" in Xi'an in 1901. In the past few years, the Qing Dynasty implemented a series of so-called "New Deal" measures. On February 1, 1902 (December 23, 27th year of Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty), the Qing government selected children of the Eight Banners to study abroad; it allowed Manchu and Han intermarriage to win over Han children. Although the Qing Dynasty's "New Deal" was intended to maintain its shaky rule, these measures were objectively conducive to social progress.
