In 1796 his first comic opera, The Woman of the Opinion, was performed in Rome. It was well received when it was performed all over Italy, thus establishing him as an opera composer. He then wrote several operas and performed them in Venice, Florence, and Naples, establishing his status as an opera composer. He arrived in Paris in 1803, and in 1804 he successfully performed his revised opera "False Philosopher"; in the same year, he also staged a new opera "Milton", which made him famous. After the performance of his masterpiece opera "The Virgin Nun", he rose to become the first-rate opera composer in Europe and won the protection and reward of Empress Josephine. His other operatic masterpiece was "Fernández Cortez" (1809). In 1810 Spontini was the conductor of the Italian Theatre in Paris, conducting 34 operas by 19 composers, a total of 418 performances. Wilhelm III died in 1840 and he was soon dismissed. He almost stopped writing in his later years and went to France, Italy, Germany and other places as a conductor. In 1848, he returned to his hometown due to ear problems and established a music school there, giving all his property to the poor in his hometown.
