Jiang Zemin, Li Ruihuan, Zhu Rongji, Liu Huaqing, Hu Jintao and other leading comrades attended the meeting. Jiang Zemin pointed out that propaganda and ideological work must arm people with scientific theories, guide people with correct public opinion, shape people with noble spirit, inspire people with excellent works, and continuously cultivate and create generations of new socialist people with ideals, morality, culture, and discipline, and play a strong ideological guarantee and public opinion support role in the great cause of building socialism with China characteristics. Jiang Zemin emphasized that propaganda and ideological work has a long front and heavy tasks. We must adhere to the ideological line of emancipating the mind and seeking truth from facts, closely focus on economic construction, conscientiously do a good job in all aspects of work, and actively promote the construction of socialist material civilization and spiritual civilization. We must insist on putting social benefits first and achieve the unity of economic benefits and social benefits on this premise; we must treat our nation's traditional culture and foreign culture with a scientific attitude; and insist that spiritual civilization focuses on construction and strengthening management. Jiang Zemin also put forward strict requirements for the propaganda and ideological work team to be "politically strong, professionally skilled, and upright in work style."
