On this day, 73 years ago, on October 20, 1952 (September 2, 1952 in the lunar calendar), volunteer soldier Huang Jiguang died heroically. Huang Jiguang, a portrait created by the painter based on the memories of Huang Jiguang's comrades, was originally named Huang Jiguang. He was born in a mountain village in Zhongjiang County, Sichuan Province on November 20, 1930. His family was extremely poor since childhood. At the age of six or seven, his father died of illness and hatred due to being oppressed by landlords. Huang Jiguang has been working as a landlord since he was a child, cutting grass and herding cattle. In the winter of 1949, when his hometown was liberated, the village organized a peasant association. Huang Jiguang not only became the first members of the peasant association and actively fought against landlords, but also became a militia in the village. After the beginning of the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea in 1950, the country stopped demobilizing soldiers and recruited a large number of soldiers. In March 1951, when Zhongjiang County recruited new volunteers, Huang Jiguang was the first to sign up in the village. During the physical examination, he was initially not selected due to his short stature. The battalion commander who came to recruit was moved by Huang Jiguang's enthusiasm for joining the army and agreed to make an exception. After arriving at the Korean front line, Huang Jiguang was assigned to serve as a sixth-term correspondent in the 2nd Battalion of the 135th Regiment of the 15th Army. In April 1952, the troops arrived at the forward position of the Five Sacred Mountains to take over, but Huang Jiguang, who wanted to kill the enemy and make meritorious service, was assigned to the company's logistics department. After careful ideological work by the deputy instructor, Huang Jiguang understood the importance of logistics work and did everything well. Joined the New Democratic Youth League of China in July 1952. With the approval of his superiors, he was awarded third-class merit once. On October 14, 1952, the Battle of Shangganling began. On the night of October 19, Huang Jiguang's Second Battalion was ordered to counterattack against the enemy who occupied the surface position of Heights 597.9. During the counterattack, they encountered crazy shooting from a hidden fire point, but the troops continued to charge without success. As dawn is approaching, if we cannot capture the high ground before dawn, it will not only cause the captured positions to fall back to the enemy, but will also directly affect the victory of the entire Shangganling counterattack. At this critical moment, Huang Jiguang participated in the attack group. During the battle, two comrades in the attack team died. The situation was very urgent. Huang Jiguang was also shot four times in his body and he fainted. The sound of the enemy's machine gun woke him up. He climbed next to the enemy's gun gun and blocked the enemy's machine gun eyes with his chest. At dawn on October 20, he used his young life to open up a way for the troops. He was only 22 years old when he died. Huang Jiguang's heroic deeds won the highest honor in the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea-his sacrifice for others and dedicated himself to serving the people was remembered by the leadership of the Volunteer Army and awarded the title of "Special Hero"(another special hero was Yang Gensi); The party committee of his unit posthumously recognized him as an official member of the Communist Party of China; the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea posthumously awarded him the title of "Hero of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea", the Golden Star Medal, and the first-class National Flag Medal. Huang Jiguang finally slept in the "Memorial Hall of the Martyrs to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea" in Shenyang City, and established the Huang Jiguang Memorial Hall in his hometown of Zhongjiang County, Sichuan.
