Today, 35 years ago, on May 20, 1990 (April 26, 1990), Eliescu was elected President of Romania. In December 1989, during the political turmoil in Romania, President Tsioshev was arrested and executed. The Committee of the Salvation Front announced its establishment and took over all power. On May 20, 1990, a general election was held in Romania. The newly elected President of the country was Eliescu. He was born in 1930, served as the First Secretary of the Communist Youth League, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Romania. In 1979 he was removed from office. In December 1989, he was elected Chairman of the Committee of the Salvation Front.
