Today, 64 years ago, on August 12, 1961 (July 2, 1961 in the lunar calendar), the famous overseas Chinese Chen Jiageng died of illness. Mr. Chen Jiageng is a great patriot, an outstanding overseas Chinese leader, a famous industrialist, educator and social activist. Chen Jiageng was born on October 21, 1874 in Jimei Society, Tong'an County, Fujian Province (now Jimei Town, Xiamen City). At the age of seventeen, he went to Singapore to start business from his father, and then independently ran a pineapple canning factory, rice shop and rubber plantation. After 1916, the rubber and rubber products industry was the main industry. In its heyday, its sales network spread all over the world. It was called one of the four pioneers of the Singapore-Malaysia Gum Kingdom and became a well-known industrialist at home and abroad. Chen Jiageng lives in a foreign country, is nostalgic for his hometown, does not seek personal gain in his business, and is determined to compete for his obligation to serve the motherland. Therefore, he devotes money to setting up educational public welfare undertakings to fulfill his national duty. As early as 1913, Jimei Primary School was founded in his hometown, and later added normal schools, middle schools, aquatic products, navigation, commerce, agriculture and other schools, collectively referred to as "Jimei School". In 1921, Chen Jiageng founded Xiamen University. He chose his own campus site, president, presided over the building of school buildings, and hired teachers with high salaries. He set up 17 departments in five colleges, including liberal arts, science, law, business and education, to train higher talents at home and abroad. In Singapore, where overseas Chinese live, he also initiated and sponsored many schools, forming an extensive open education system in Chen Jiageng. Despite the world economic crisis and the failure of business operations to turn around, he still raised school fees in various ways and persevered in running schools. In 1932, when a foreign consortium promised to protect its business operations on the condition of stopping supporting Xiamen University and Jimei School, he flatly refused. Until the spring of 1937, he was unable to support it, so he unconditionally dedicated Xiamen University to the government. After Xiamen University was changed to "national", he paid great attention to its development. During his return to China in 1940 to express his condolences, he also specially visited the school that moved to Changting in the mainland. In 1949, he also visited the school when he returned to China; After settling in Jimei in 1952, he continued to raise funds and plan to expand the school scale. Under his advocacy, it has become a common practice for many overseas Chinese to donate money to study, which has far-reaching influence. He not only devoted himself to education, but also had excellent educational thoughts, advocating that students should develop in an all-round way in moral education, intellectual education and physical education, advocating vocational and technical education, attaching great importance to normal education, and attaching importance to the decisive role of principals and teachers in running schools. He also promoted social education, pro-built Jimei Aoyuan "Grand View of Museum" and advocated the construction of Xiamen Overseas Chinese Museum. Chen Jiageng is sincere in patriotism and revitalizes China. He met Sun Yat-sen in 1909 and joined the League the following year. After the recovery of Fujian Province in the Revolution of 1911, he was elected as the president of Fujian Security Association in Singapore to raise funds to support Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary activities. After the outbreak of the "July 7th" Anti-Japanese War in 1937, he organized the "Nanyang Overseas Chinese Association to Relief Refugees from the Motherland" (referred to as "Nanyang Overseas Chinese Association" for short) and was elected as the chairman to lead the support of the motherland to resist Japan and save the nation. In 1939, Wang Jingwei betrayed the country and surrendered to the enemy, and he severely denounced it. In March, 1940, he led the "Nanyang Overseas Chinese Comfort Inspection Mission" to return to China to inspect various war zones, Chongqing, Yan'an and other places. He was not afraid of rape, adhered to the truth, distinguished right from wrong, pinned his hope of saving the country and the people on the Communist Party of China (CPC), opposed Chiang Kai-shek's dictatorship, and persisted in uniting the war of resistance. In December 1941, when Japanese imperialism attacked Malaya, he led the "Singapore Overseas Chinese Anti-Enemy Mobilization Association". In March 1942, Singapore fell and took refuge in Java, Indonesia. He wrote poems to show his determination to sacrifice his life for righteousness. In 1945, Japanese imperialism surrendered and he returned to Singapore safely; People from all walks of life gathered to celebrate, and everyone expected it. In 1949, he was invited by Chairman Mao Zedong to return to China to attend the meeting of the New CPPCC and the founding ceremony, and returned to China to settle down in February 1952. He has served as a member of the Central People's Government, a member of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee, and the chairman of the Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese. He has been elected as a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and directly participated in state affairs. He has been over seventy years old, and he still worked tirelessly to inspect all parts of the motherland, devoted himself to the cause of socialist construction of the motherland, and played a positive role in promoting the patriotic unity of overseas Chinese and supporting the construction of the motherland and hometown. On his deathbed, he was still obsessed with the great cause of reunification of the motherland. Chen Jiageng died of illness in Beijing on August 12th, 1961, at the age of 87. The state gave him the honor of a state funeral, and the coffin was transported back to Jimei and buried in the "Aoyuan". Constantly strive for self-improvement and stop at perfection.
