77 years ago today, on December 5, 1948 (November 5, 1948 in the lunar calendar), the Battle of Pingjin began. Pingjin Campaign On December 5, 1948, the Northeast and North China Field Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army launched the Pingjin Campaign against the Kuomintang army in Peiping, Tianjin and Zhangjiakou areas. After the Liaoshen Campaign, more than 600,000 Kuomintang troops in Ping, Tianjin and Zhang areas quickly reduced their strength in an attempt to flee south or west to Suiyuan by sea. In order to stabilize the enemies in Pingjin from escaping, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Mao Zedong instructed the Northeast Field Army to secretly enter Shanhaiguan as soon as possible, and first surround the enemies in Tianjin, Tanggu, Lutai and Tangshan, so that they could be annihilated after the deployment was completed. However, Lin Biao, the main person in charge of the Northeast Field Army, refused to implement it. After the Central Committee and Mao Zedong corrected Lin Biao's right-leaning mistakes, the two corps and local troops of the Northeast and North China Field Armies, with a total of 1 million people, launched an attack on the front line of more than 1,200 miles between Luanxian County and Zhangjiakou on December 5, 1948. The People's Liberation Army divided and surrounded the enemy in five strongholds: Peiping, Tianjin, Zhangjiakou, Xinbao'an and Tanggu. On December 22, the headquarters and two divisions of the 35th Army, the enemy of New Security, were besieged and annihilated. On the 24th, Zhangjiakou was captured, and one army headquarters and seven divisions of the enemy were completely wiped out. On January 14, 1949, a general offensive was launched against Tianjin. After 29 hours of fierce fighting, 130,000 enemy defenders were wiped out, enemy commander Chen Changjie was captured alive, and Tianjin was liberated. At this point, more than 200,000 enemies in Beiping were completely desperate. After the efforts of the People's Liberation Army, they accepted peaceful adaptation under the leadership of Fu Zuoyi, commander-in-chief of the Kuomintang's North China "Suppression General". On January 31st, Beiping was peacefully liberated, and the entire Pingjin Campaign ended successfully. In this battle, in addition to more than 50,000 enemy defenders in Tanggu who fled from the sea, more than 520,000 Kuomintang troops were annihilated and reorganized, and the war of liberating North China basically ended.
