First International Literacy Day 8 September 1966
In 1966, UNESCO’s Fourteenth General Assembly declared September 8 International Literacy Day to be celebrated every year. Its purpose was to fight the phenomenon of illiteracy by member states and relevant international institutions. Since then, member states have organized various activities each year. Many national governments and non-governmental organizations have sent letters and notices to their people to call for the establishment of national, regional and local illiteracy organizations through various media to promote the importance of illiteration, evaluate the achievements of illiteration, and further study the methods and measures of illiteration. Our Party and government has always attached importance to illiteration.
