Leader of the Clean Oceans Movement, Li Hengqing, opens medical school in Tianjin

On December 19, 1893, the leader of the Qing ocean affairs movement, Li Hongzhi, opened the Medical Academy in Tianjin, which was the first medical school in China.

The first public medical school in China was the North Ocean Medical School, also known as the Tianjin Military Medical School, its predecessor was the medical school founded by Governor Li Hengcheng in the North Ocean Medical Bureau in 1881. The school hired Dr. Magenzie of the British Missionary Church in London as a doctor, recruiting students in the division and B two kinds. In December 1893, Li Hong Cheng commissioned the French Military Medicine Meni to create the North Ocean Medical Hall on the basis of the original "Medical Academy", and attached the North Ocean Hospital to specialize in training military medical talents. Located on the French Border Sea Avenue (now 17th Middle School). This is a Chinese old-fashioned civic building, donated by the Tianjin Commercial Bureau headquarters Zhu Yuan. The school and the hospital are old-fashioned ancient buildings, high doors, black painted doors, each hanging one, respectively, "Northern Medical Academy" and "Northern Hospital", both written by Li Hong Cheng. There are more than 180 houses, then added 78 rooms.

After the school was completed, it was commissioned to supervise the medical bachelor of the University of Edinburgh Medical School in the UK and the Guangzhou University of Medicine in Guangzhou. Early enrollment was limited to the province of Guangzhou, and student accommodation was provided free of charge by the school. Tianjin local hosts protested against the student crowd of the province of Guangzhou only, and the proportion of the seats began to be recruited. In 1910, the school's teaching staff had three Chinese doctors and two foreign doctors. At this time, the school changed its name to the "Northern Navy Medical School", which was directly administered by the Ministry of Navy, and specialized in training Navy military doctors.

In October 1912, the Ministry of Education issued the "Special School Ordinance", the North Ocean Navy Medical School in 1913 changed its name to the Special School of Medicine directly subordinate, by the Chancellor Heng Saleng. In 1914, new buildings and anatomy rooms, hospital admissions were approximately 400-500 people per day. In the first year of the People's Republic, the school was enrolled once in the country every two or three years, with a maximum of 30 people each time, the enrollment examination was quite strict.
