Today, 173 years ago, on September 24, 1852 (August 11, 1852), the French Gifal made a steam-powered spacecraft test flight successfully. On September 24, 1852, the French Henry Gifal made the world’s first power-powered piloted spacecraft. This 43-meter-long, hydrogen-filled spacecraft was driven by a steam engine and flew 27 kilometers at a speed of 8 kilometers per hour. Gifal then made another giant suspension balloon. Around 35,000 people traveled with his suspension balloon at the 1878 Paris World Expo.
