On September 24, 1852, the French Henry Gifal made the world’s first power-powered piloted spacecraft. This 43-meter-long, hydrogen-filled spacecraft was driven by a steam engine and flew 27 kilometers at a speed of 8 kilometers per hour. Gifal then made another giant suspension balloon.
