Today, 53 years ago, on May 26, 1972 (Calendar April 14, 1972) the USSR signed the Strategic Nuclear Arms Limitation Agreement. In early 1964, the United States proposed to the Soviet Union to negotiate on the limitation of strategic weapons. On October 25, 1969, the two sides reached an agreement, and on November 17, 1969 in Helsinki. On May 26, 1972, the heads of the USSR and the USSR signed in Moscow the Treaty on the Limitation of Anti-Ballistic Missile Systems and the Interim Agreement on Certain Measures to Limit Offensive Strategic Weapons, and a series of Additional Protocols, collectively referred to as the First Phase Treaty on the Limitation of Strategic Weapons.
