On August 5, 1772, the Russians first divided Poland. On that day, the three countries signed a treaty to divide Poland. Poland lost about 50 percent of its population and one-third of its territory, and the lands east of the Devene, the Drute and the Dnieper were all incorporated into the Russian map. The Prussians acquired a wealth of property in the Royal Prussian province and the northern part of the Greater Polish region. Austria received the small Polish region south of the Vistula, the western Podolska and later the territory called Galicia.
