On October 18, 1991, Chen Cheng, a 30-year-old Professor of Biology at Beijing University, became the first Chinese to receive the International Excellent Young Scientist Award. In a letter to Chen Chen Cheng, the Director of UNESCO, Frederick Meir, wrote: “It is a great honor and pleasure to inform you that under the recommendation of the International Jury, you have been awarded the International Excellent Young Scientist Award in 1991.” The International Excellent Young Scientist Award was selected once every two years, and the recommended should have an outstanding contribution in natural science research and new sciences, not exceeding the age of 35.
