Today, 88 years ago, on September 19, 1937 (August 15, 1937), Japan used illegal means of “Made in America” to compete against the United States in the South American market. In September 1937, Japan’s latest trick in competing with the United States in the Latin American market was to label Japanese goods as “Made in the United States” and then ship to some countries. This violated the trade policy of these countries to maintain balanced exports of Japanese imports. In Columbia, the Japanese machinery labeled with American trademarks was distributed by a German merchant. These Japanese goods filled with the Latin American market were generally lower secondary goods over the past few years.
