The conference was chaired by Li Peng, and the General Secretary Jiang Zemin issued a resolution entitled "Accelerating the reform and opening up and modernization and achieving a greater victory in the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics". The meeting elected a new Central Committee, the Political Bureau and the Political Bureau Standing Committee and agreed to no longer establish a Central Advisory Committee.
