Today, 85 years ago, on July 12, 1940 (Calendar, June 8, 1940), Britain destroyed the French fleet in Algeria. Hit by torpedoes launched by the Germans, the French North African Fleet burned in the Mediterranean Sea in July 1940, destined to lead to the deterioration of French-British relations and to defeat efforts to contain Hitler. The British Navy fired on and sinked several of the warships stationed in the port of Kabil in Algeria. Around 1,000 French sailors were killed. Winston Churchill has been concerned that the ships that did not join the De Gaulle resistance movement would be recruited by the Germans. He did not realize that the French had been ordered to sink these warships that could not resist German attacks.
