On November 20, 2007, ASEAN 10 leaders signed the ASEAN Charter at the 13th Summit in Singapore. This is the first document with universal legal obligation for ASEAN member states in 40 years, a milestone in the ASEAN integration process. The charter makes clear provisions on ASEAN¡¯s strategic goals, principles, status and structures. The charter states that ASEAN is committed toining and strengthening peace, security and stability in the region, as well as continuing economic integration; adhering to the basic principles of non-interference in its internal affairs; respecting the independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity and national characteristics of member states; adhering to the peaceful resolution of disputes.
