Administratively co-domain with Orleans County. New Orleans is also a metropolis and an economic city in the United States. In 2013, the GDP of New Orleans exceeded $180 billion, making it the most economically developed city in the state. The New Orleans metro area has a population of 378,715 (2013) and the metro area has a population of 1,240,977 (2013).

New Orleans was hit by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 with severe losses. Caused by a sharp decline in population, from the last century 1997 to the new century in 2004, New Orleans' urban population exceeded 790,000, but with the 2005 Hurricane Katrina attack, resulting in residents evacuated from New Orleans, now the city's population is only over 370,000, is the second major city after the United States after Detroit, the massive decline in urban population.

In 1718, under the guidance of Indian tribes, the French, under the leadership of their leader Jean-Baptiste Bienville, settled down in the only highland near the mouth of the Mississippi River. The earliest old city of New Orleans is today the French Quarter by the river. After the opening of the port, the first group of residents were quite unbearable.
