Breaking-News >> TodayHistory King George VI of England was born.
King George VI (14 December 1895-6 February 1952), formerly Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor ("Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor"), reigned from 11 December 1936 to 6 February 1952. He was the last Indian Emperor (1936-1947), the last Irish King (1936-1949), and the only Indian Dominion King (1947-1949). George VI was known as "Bertie" by his family, and before he ascended the throne, he was known as "Prince Albert" by the public. He was the second son of George V (formerly Duke of York) and Queen Mary (formerly Duchess Mary). In 1920 he became Duke of York, Earl of Inverness and Baron of Killarney. At the time, he seemed unlikely to inherit the throne because his brother, Prince Edward, who was very popular and intelligent, was ahead of him in order of inheritance. It was because of this that Prince Albert was allowed to serve in the British Royal Navy during World War I and had greater freedom in choosing his wife. In 1923, after being rejected many times, he finally married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Since they were unlikely to inherit the throne, the couple were able to raise their two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, in a more normal environment. Albert was very shy and suffered from severe sickness throughout his life. He was unhappy when he learned in 1936 that the brother who succeeded to Edward VIII finally decided to resign for marriage issues and would inherit the throne. On May 12, 1937, he signed up in the Cathedral of Westminster and changed his name to George VI, doing so in accordance with the wish of Queen XXX that after all British monarchs could not be named "Albert" and on the other hand by using the same name as his father to rebuild public confidence in the royal family. Two years later, when World War II broke out, the royal family with low reputation at that time hoped to be a role model in leading the country to victory, and they were indeed an important factor in maintaining the fighting spirit of the British people in World War II. The king's Christmas speech at the beginning of the war boosted morale. In June, 1939, the king and his wife visited the United States. This was the first time that a British monarch visited the United States. After the war, the king's health deteriorated rapidly. George VI suffered from severe lung cancer due to long-term smoking. His last public appearance was at the London airport to see off his eldest daughter Elizabeth, who was visiting Africa. On February 6, 1952, George VI died in his sleep of a thrombosis, and his body was buried at Windsor Castle. The eldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth, acceded to the throne as Elizabeth II.
