July 16, 1967 General Strike of American Railroad Workers
Fifty-eight years ago today, on July 16, 1967 (June 9, 1967 in the lunar calendar), there was a general strike of railroad workers in the United States. On July 16, 1967, 137,000 railroad workers launched a national strike. This strike was caused by the soaring prices and the declining real wages of workers caused by the American war of aggression against Vietnam. After that, as many as 700,000 railway workers were involved in this strike, and the strike forced more than 95% of railway passenger and freight transportation in the United States to a standstill. According to the estimate of the US news agency, the strike cost the railway management 75 million dollars within 48 hours. It was the first national strike of railroad workers in the United States after the war. US President Johnson claimed that the United States was facing "a national crisis" due to the railway strike.
