136 years ago today, on November 20th, 1889 (October 28th, 1889 in the lunar calendar), Edwin Hubble, a famous American astronomer, was born. Edwin Powell Hubble (November 20, 1889-September 28, 1953) was a famous American astronomer. Hubble confirmed the existence of other galaxies outside the Milky Way galaxy, discovered that most galaxies have redshifts, and established Hubble's Law, which is strong evidence of the expansion of the universe (see Big Bang theory). Hubble is recognized as the founder of galactic astronomy and a trailblazer of observational cosmology. And is honored by the astronomical community as the father of galaxy astronomy. To commemorate Hubble's contribution, asteroid 2069, Hubble Crater on the moon and Hubble Space Telescope are all named after him. Hubble was born to a family of insurance practitioners in Missouri and moved to Illinois in 1898. He was good at sports in his boyhood, often entering the top three in sports competitions, and once set a new interstate record in high jump. He studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Chicago, received a bachelor of science degree in 1910, and later a master of law degree from Oxford University in England. He was also one of the first Rhodes scholars. After graduation, he returned to China and worked as a teacher and basketball coach at a middle school in Indiana. After the First World War, he enlisted in the Army. After the war, he returned to the University of Chicago to study for a doctorate, studied astronomy at the Yakes Observatory, and graduated in 1917. In 1919, Hubble was hired by Hale at Wilson Observatory and became his tenure position. The observatory once built a 200-inch telescope, and Hubble was the first user. In 1953, Hubble died of a stroke. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/15pk.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.27-14:33] 访问:88
