September 6, 1522 Magellan's circumnavigation ended
On this day 503 years ago, on September 6th, 1522 (August 17th, 1522 in the lunar calendar), Magellan's voyage around the world ended. Magellan was a Portuguese explorer with rich seafaring experience. During his teenage years, Columbus discovered the New World of America, and da Gama opened a new shipping channel to India. Magellan had traveled to India, Africa, and Southeast Asia before he sailed around the world. He learned that there was still a sea east of the Spice Islands (the Maluku Islands in eastern Indonesia), and he guessed that the newly discovered America must be to the east. He firmly believes that the earth is round, and hopes to do an unprecedented feat in human history-sailing around the earth. Magellan applied to the king of Portugal to organize a fleet of ships to explore, but was repeatedly rejected. Magellan made another request to the King of Spain to sail around the world. King Charles gave him permission to organize a fleet to sail. On September 20, 1519, a voyage consisting of five seagoing ships and 234 people set off from the outer port of Seville, Spain. Each ship is equipped with muskets and cannons, everyone carries sharp knives and daggers, and the ship is full of all kinds of goods. Magellan's fleet sailed westward in the vast Atlantic Ocean for 70 years before reaching the coast of Brazil. They continued their voyage south, and by March 1520, it was winter when the fleet arrived at the port of San Julian in southern Argentina. Because of hunger and cold, people's hearts are floating. Three captains took the opportunity to launch a rebellion and even tried to kill Magellan. But Magellan calmly commanded his men to crush this plot in time. It was not until August, when the weather warmed up, that the Magellanic fleet continued its exploration. Two months later, the fleet sailed into a fast-flowing channel. Magellan led the fleet to explore and sail, and it took twenty-eight days to get out of the channel. This strait in southern Chile in South America was later named "Strait of Magellan". Out of the west entrance of the strait, the fleet sailed in the endless ocean for another 110 days, but it didn't encounter strong winds and waves, and it was safe all the time. Therefore, they named this ocean "Pacific Ocean". But during these long days when only the sea was seen but no land was seen, the tar on the ship was sunburned, the drinking water became smelly, the biscuits became powder, and maggots squirmed in them. Without fresh food, the crew had to eat cowhide and rats in the cabin. The terrible scurvy claimed the lives of some of the crew. In March 1521, the fleet finally reached a densely populated and rich archipelago. After a rest, the Magellanic fleet continued westward to what is now the Philippine Islands. Magellan wanted to control this beautiful and rich place by intervening in the war between two local tribes. But when he helped one tribe attack another, he was seriously wounded and finally killed by the indigenous spear and axe. His assistant, Eri Kano, led the remaining two ships to escape the archipelago. On September 6, 1522, Eli Cano finally led the survivors back to Spain, with only one ship and eighteen men left. This three-year round-the-world voyage proved that the earth is round with conclusive facts, and the debate about the place and the round of the earth came to an end. Magellan and others have made indelible contributions to the history of science and navigation. However, the opening of new air routes also brought about colonial aggression, which brought about great changes in the world situation.
