On this day 147 years ago, August 28, 1878 (August 1, 1878 in the lunar calendar), American pathologist George Whipple was born. George Whipple (1878-1976), American pathologist and physician. Born August 28, 1878 in Ashland, NH; Died 1 February 1976 in Rochester, New York. He graduated from Yale University in 1900 and received a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1905. He first stayed in the Panama Canal Zone for some time, and then studied and taught at Johns Hopkins University for several years, and then became a professor of medicine at the University of California in 1914. In 1921, he went to work at the University of Rochester, founded the University of Rochester School of Medicine, and became the first dean until 1953. His main research interest is bile pigment, which is the same as that of Plegel and Wieland, but he takes a third direction on this problem. He thought that since bile pigment is formed by hemoglobin in the body, we should start with its formation and find out how the human body manipulates hemoglobin. Therefore, in 1917, he started a series of experiments. He bled dogs to cause anemia, and then paid attention to observing how new red blood cells were formed. He fed dogs with various diets, and observed what effect it had on the formation of red blood cells. He found that liver was the most effective food among them. His work opened the way for the successful treatment of pernicious anemia by George Richards Minot (1885-1950) and Murphy (1892-1987), for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1934.
