On August 15, 2005, the Israeli government, despite strong opposition from the domestic right-wing forces, officially launched a two-year unilateral action plan; within a month, the evacuation of 21 Jewish settlements from the Gaza Strip was successfully completed, ending the 38-year occupation of Gaza. In addition, Israel evacuated four relatively isolated settlements in the northern West Bank.
