May 29, 1997 China Decides to Participate in the United Nations Peacekeeping Standby Agreement
Today, 28 years ago, on May 29, 1997 (April 23, 1997), China decided to participate in the United Nations Peacekeeping Standing Arrangement. China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Wang Qian, announced at the United Nations headquarters in New York that the Chinese government decided in principle to participate in the United Nations Peacekeeping Standing Arrangement and will provide military observers, civil police and engineering logistics units to the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations at the appropriate time. Wang Qian said that China attaches great importance to the United Nations peacekeeping work.
