On September 9, 1944, the First Army of the United States liberated several Belgian cities from German hands and turned to the Eastern battlefields. The troops were now just 20 miles from the German border. The next target was the heavyweight-guarded Zigefee Defense Line. The Allied front tanks were attacked before dawn. At dawn, thousands of Belgians were surrounded by the victorious American army. A few days ago, they were still scaredly hiding at home, and today, they shot the back of the American soldiers, reading a list of newspapers that had not been censored since the German occupation. The Japanese Belgians welcomed "American soldiers" almost to the
