Today, 60 years ago, on 19 July 1965 (Calendar 21 June 1965), South Korea’s President Li Hyun Ying died. Lee Hyun Ying (March 26, 1875-19 July 1965) was the first to third President of the Republic of Korea (1948-1960). Born in Yunnan, North Korea, in 1875 he was a descendant of the Korean royal family (the longest son of the exiled Korean Prime Minister Li Hyun Ying, the sixteenth son of the exiled government of the same year). He studied at the University of China (then known as the School of China) and received a bachelor’s degree in politics from the Washington University in 1905 and an international political doctorate from the University of Princeton in 1910.
