On November 19, 1863, American President Abraham Lincoln delivered the famous Gettysburg Speech
162 years ago today, on November 19th, 1863 (October 9th, 1863 in the lunar calendar), American President Abraham Lincoln delivered the famous Gettysburg Address. On November 19th, 1863, American President Abraham Lincoln delivered the famous Gettysburg Address. The United States became independent in 1776 and broke away from British rule. In less than a hundred years, it has developed into a superpower. Due to the vast territory, the differences between the north and the south are also great. The northern United States relies on industry and commerce and demands higher tariffs to protect the market for their products; The South depended on agriculture and needed a free trade system so that their cotton, tobacco and rice could be sold to European countries. But the bigger difference between the two sides lies in whether to liberate the slaves. In 1860, AbrahamLincoln was elected president of the United States. Although Southerners agreed with Lincoln's view that slavery would eventually disappear from the face of the earth, black slaves' cotton cultivation brought them economic prosperity, and they were afraid of change. Southern artillery opened fire first on April 12, 1861, and the United States began a Civil War that lasted four years. The Battle of Gettysburg was a large-scale battle in the Civil War, and the result of the war played a decisive role in the whole civil war process. In order to commemorate this great battle, the U.S. government built a national cemetery here. Lincoln delivered the famous Gettysburg Address to 10,000 people present at the unveiling ceremony, encouraging people to fight for the * principle of equality for all. It was November 19th, 1863. Speech: Eighty-seven years ago, our ancestors founded a new nation on this continent, born of freedom and dedicated to the idea that all people are born equal. Right now, we are engaged in a great civil war, and we are testing whether this nation, or any nation with such claims and such beliefs, can last forever. We gathered on one of the great battlefields of that war. We came here to offer a part of the land on that battlefield as a permanent resting place for those who sacrificed their lives here for the survival of that nation. It makes perfect sense for us to do so. In a deeper sense, however, we cannot offer this land-we cannot make it sacred-and we cannot make it a place of admiration. Those warriors who fought here, living and dead, have consecrated this land far beyond our modest power. The world will not pay much attention, let alone remember what we say here for long, but they will never forget what these people have done here. On the contrary, we who are alive should dedicate ourselves to the unfinished work bravely promoted by those who fought here. Here we should dedicate ourselves to the great work that remains before us--by their glorious sacrifice, we should be more firmly committed to the cause to which they made all their last contribution--and here we pledge not to let their deaths be in vain--that this nation will be reborn in freedom under God's protection--that the government of the people, by the people, and for the people will not disappear from the face of the earth. Famous speech, fighting for freedom
