August 4, 1912 U.S. Marines marched into Nicaragua
113 years ago today, on August 4, 1912 (June 22, 1912 in the lunar calendar), the U.S. Marine Corps marched into Nicaragua. Marines clear roadblocks erected by rebels An American syndicate, which runs a railway and steamship industry in Nicaragua, protested that some of its ships were snatched by General Luis Mena's rebels. The Adolfo-Díaz administration asked the United States to use its own military to protect its citizens and their property in Nicaragua. This incident will bring benefits to Secretary of State Philander C-Knox's "gold dollar diplomacy" policy. According to this policy, the United States will lend money to small Central American countries to help these governments maintain stability. In order to protect American property and maintain Nicaraguan social order, Congress may eventually be forced to pass a pending treaty on Nicaragua, and has pledged to provide Nicaragua a loan of 10 million yuan. The delay in making a decision to provide this loan has caused the Nicaraguan government to be in serious difficulties. The treasury was empty, the people in some areas suffered from starvation, and the army had to deal with riots and uprisings throughout the country.
