October 18, 1924 Beijing Coup
101 years ago today, on October 18th, 1924 (September 20th, 1924 in the lunar calendar), Feng Yuxiang launched a coup in Beijing to overthrow the Cao Kun government. On October 23, Feng Jun Lu Zhonglin's troops marched into Beijing to launch the "Beijing Coup". On October 18, 1924, Feng Yuxiang launched the "Beijing Coup" and imprisoned Cao Kun. In October, after the outbreak of the Second Zhifeng War, Feng Yuxiang, a direct general, led his troops to Gubeikou and served as the commander-in-chief of the Third Army of the Left-wing Combat Army. Feng secretly planned to defect with Hu Jingyi, commander of the second route of direct reinforcements, and Sun Yue, deputy commander of the Gyeonggi Garrison. At the beginning of the war, the direct army lost. Wu Peifu urgently dispatched the third division of the powerful force stationed between Changxindian and Fengtai to assist. On October 18th, he ordered a general attack on Fengjun. Taking advantage of the emptiness in the rear, Feng Yuxiang lost no time in secretly returning to Beijing from the Gubeikou and Miyun front lines on the 19th. On the 21st, Feng Yuxiang ordered Lu Zhonglin to lead his troops to Beijing at a speed of 200 miles day and night. On the afternoon of the 22nd, he arrived in Beiyuan to meet Jiang Hongyu, the left-behind commander. At 8 o'clock in the evening, he led his troops from Beiyuan, rode lightly and quietly to Andingmen. At this time, it was nearly 12 o'clock in the middle of the night, and the night was deep, and the city was silent. The defenders Sun Yue's troops had already received orders to open the city gates to welcome Lu Zhonglin. The troops that had mixed into the city in advance had been deployed as originally, surrounded the presidential palace at 11 o'clock, cut off the telephone line, and occupied key departments such as the telephone office, telegraph office and railway station. Because of the sudden incident, the policemen everywhere disarmed obediently. After Lu Zhonglin entered the city, he set up his headquarters in Ancestral Temple, and commanded the troops to quickly deploy defenses throughout Beijing, blocking all important traffic intersections. At this time, the chief of the Presidential Palace Guard was playing cards all night, completely unaware of what was happening outside. Lu Zhonglin went down to alarm them, and only ordered Zhang Junsheng to strengthen his vigilance and closely guard them. First, he sent people to arrest Cao Kun's confidant Li Yanqing and Cao Kun's younger brother Cao Rui. At 5 o'clock in the morning on the 23rd, Lu Zhonglin took control of the whole city of Beijing. At about 6 o'clock, he asked Sun Yue to send someone to disarm the presidential palace guard and imprisoned Cao Kun. During the whole coup, not a single shot was fired and not a single Beijing citizen was disturbed. In the early morning, the citizens were surprised to find that the city was full of National Army soldiers wearing armbands of "Do not disturb the people, be truly patriotic, and save the country to the death", only to realize that great changes had taken place in Beijing overnight. On the same day, Feng Yuxiang, Hu Jingyi, and Sun Yue jointly sent a telegram to maintain peace, and at the same time asked Cao Kun to order an armistice and remove Wu Peifu from all his positions. On October 24th, Feng Yuxiang convened a meeting of Hu Jingyi, Sun Yue, Huang Fu, Wang Chengbin, etc., and unanimously decided to immediately telegram Sun Yat-sen to go north to preside over the national plan, and agreed to invite Duan Qirui to Beijing first to maintain the situation; Before Sun and Duan entered Beijing, Huang Fu organized the cabinet to handle government affairs. The meeting also decided to name the troops of Feng, Hu and Sun as the National Army of the Republic of China, temporarily organizing three armies, with Feng Yuxiang as the commander-in-chief and commander of the First Army, Hu Jingyi as the deputy commander and commander of the Second Army, and Sun Yue as the deputy commander and commander of the Third Army. After the meeting, Feng and others jointly telegraphed Duan Qirui as the Grand Marshal of the National Army, and joined forces with Zhang Zuolin, a warlord of the Fengxi, to elect Duan Qirui as the Beijing interim government. On October 25th, a telegram was sent, asking Sun Yat-sen to go north to discuss the country. General Feng Yuxiang, who launched the Beijing Coup, took a group photo during the "Beijing Coup" when Feng Yuxiang's troops held a military meeting in Luanping
