Breaking-News >> TodayHistory July 18, 1998 Experts estimate that the Yellow River will break downstream throughout the year in 2020
Today, 27 years ago, on July 18, 1998 (leap May 25, 1998 in the lunar calendar), experts estimated that the lower reaches of the Yellow River would stop flowing throughout the year in 2020. In 2020, the lower reaches of the Yellow River will be cut off throughout the year. This is the view put forward by water conservancy experts at the '98 International Year of the Ocean "Love My Blue Land" Ocean Publicity Day Conference on July 18th, 1998. In recent years, the cutoff of the Yellow River has intensified. The Yellow River cut-off began in the early 1970s. In the 25 years since 1970, the Yellow River cut-off 18 times. In the 1970s, the flow was cut off 6 times, with an average of 7 days, and the cut-off reach was 130 kilometers long; In the 1980s, the flow was cut off 7 times, with an average of 7.4 days, and the cut-off reach was 150 kilometers long; In the 1990s, the flow was cut off five times in six years, with an average of 53 days, and the cut-off section was 300 kilometers long. Among them, in 1995, the Yellow River was cut off for 122 days, and the cut-off reach was 683 kilometers long. According to the data provided by relevant departments, in 1996, the Yellow River was cut off for 136 days, with a cut-off reach of 579 kilometers; In 1997, the Yellow River stopped flowing for 226 days, with a reach of 700 kilometers. According to preliminary estimates, the Yellow River has been cut off for 118 days this year, and the cut-off reach is about 480 kilometers. According to this calculation, the Yellow River will be cut off for 140 days in 2000; In 2010, the Yellow River will be cut off for 200 days; In 2020, the lower reaches of the Yellow River will be cut off throughout the year. Experts predict that it is a foregone conclusion that the Yellow River will become an inland river. The cut-off of the Yellow River will not only bring adverse effects on the sustainable development of this area and people's lives, but also cause far-reaching ecological problems, such as the drop of groundwater level on both sides of the Yellow River, dry climate, land drought, reduction of biodiversity, seawater erosion in the estuary of the Yellow River, and desertification of the Yellow River affecting flood discharge.
