On July 1, 2006 (June 6, 2006 in the lunar calendar), the entire Qinghai-Tibet Railway was successfully completed and opened to traffic. After five years of hard work by more than 100,000 road-building troops, the Golmud-Lhasa section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway was completed. So far, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the highest altitude and longest plateau railway in the world, was successfully completed and opened to traffic. On the morning of July 1, 2006, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway opening celebration meeting was held simultaneously in Golmud, Qinghai Province and Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region. Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the State and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, made a special trip to Golmud to attend the celebration meeting and deliver an important speech. Hu Jintao emphasized that the successful practice of building the Qinghai-Tibet Railway once again shows the world that the industrious and intelligent Chinese people have the ambition, confidence and ability to continuously create extraordinary achievements, and have the ambition, confidence and ability to stand among the advanced nations in the world. The whole party and the people of all ethnic groups should learn and carry forward the spirit of challenging limits and creating first-class Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and work together to build a well-off society in an all-round way and continue to push forward the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
