Nikolai Alekseevich Ostrovsky was born in a working family in 1904. After graduating from primary church school, he was forced to leave school because of the poverty of his home. In 1919, he joined the Soviet Communist Youth League and participated in the fight against the Red Army. In 1923-1924, he worked in the Communist Youth League. In 1924, he joined the Communist Party. In 1927, he was completely paralyzed and blinded due to illness. He wrote long novels, How Steel Was Made, and How Storm Was Born, with astonishing persistence, describing the experience of Soviet youth training in the revolutionary meltdown. How Steel Was Refined was translated into Chinese in 1942, and the author Paul Korkinsha became a model for learning in China. On December 22, 1936, Ostrovsky died.
