On November 15, 1986, at 5:59 p.m. Beijing time, China's Taiwan province occurred at 7:00 p.m. in the east sea area, i.e. at 24:00 north latitude, and at 7:00 p.m. in the east area.

According to preliminary understanding, there is a general feeling in the coastal areas of Fujian Province, and Fuzhou and Xiamen feel strongly. Some people in Sanming inland Fujian Province, Shantou along the coast of Guangdong Province, Wenzhou along the coast of Zhejiang Province and Zhoushan Islands feel it. According to another measurement, after this strong earthquake, aftershocks occurred continuously, of which one at 7:04 reached magnitude 6.8.

According to the Taiwan side, two strong earthquakes have occurred in Taiwan this morning at 5:30 p.m., killing at least five people and wounding dozens.

The Taiwan newspaper that the two earthquakes were of magnitude 6.8 and 6.3 respectively. The earthquake was located in the waters near the east coast of Taiwan, 110 kilometers south of Taipei. According to Taiwan police, shortly after the first earthquake, a three-storey residential building in Taipei collapsed, at least four people died and more than thirty people were injured. This strong earthquake shook the high-rise buildings in northern Taiwan. One fisherman disappeared.

The U.S. Geological Survey said it was the largest earthquake in the region since the eighth grade 3 earthquake on June 5, 1920.
